For Herbeck, poetry was the process by which the passions of his disordered soul were objectified into socially acceptable forms, and the patient seems to recognize it himself. “The Mouth” is certainly a poem about Herbeck’s own cleft lip, but it also dramatizes the psychological transference that art therapy intends to produce.
