Apr 4, 2021 We forecast the annual average CO2 concentration at Mauna Loa to be 2.29 ± 0.55 parts per million (ppm) higher in 2021 than in 2020.

CO2 levels are updated daily with data directly from NOAA's science lab on the slopes of Moana Loa volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. Atmospheric carbon dioxide measurements have been collected here daily since 1959. Pre-1959 data comes from ice core data taken from Antarctica. CO2 concentration at the Mauna Loa Observatory reached a daily record of 421.21 Parts Per Million (PPM) on April 3.

This new record represents an increase of 85 ppm in the 55 years since David Keeling began making measurements at Mauna Loa. The data shows as temperature varied by 16F while CO2 varied by 90 ppm or about 5.5 ppm / F. So if CO2 is up another 100 ppm, we’d expect another 18F increase yet none at all is shown in the ice sample data. CO2 and Past Climates As a point of reference, pre-industrial CO2 levels were around 280 parts per million (ppm) and today, we stand at 410ppm. The most distant period in time for which we have estimated CO2 levels is around the Ordovician period, 500 million years ago. At the time, atmospheric CO2 concentration was at a whopping 3000 to 9000 ppm! There has historically been much more CO2 in our atmosphere than exists today. For example: During the Jurassic Period (200 mya), average CO2 concentrations were about 1800 ppm or about 4.7 times Even with 5000 ppm from today's 400 ppm Co2 level, even at 1 million ppm, CO2 temperature decreases ! This figure shows the atmospheric increase of CO 2 over 280 ppm in weekly averages of CO 2 observed at Mauna Loa. The value of 280 ppm is chosen as representative of pre-industrial air because it is close to the average of CO 2 measured and dated with high time resolution between the years 1000 and 1800 in an ice core from Law Dome, Antarctica. Ned, "if CO2 were to go over 2000 ppm today most of that ice would (eventually) be gone." Agreed. And I certainly am not questioning the role of solar irradiance.
